Defective jogging stroller could lead to product liability claims

Jogging strollers are a popular baby shower item for parents who still plan to live active lifestyles once their children are born. Unlike standard strollers, jogging strollers are usually equipped with different, sturdier wheels and greater maneuverability. Most New York parents feel safe when placing their child in a jogging stroller, but some of that trust might have been misplaced. Pacific Cycle recently issued a recall for its popular brand of jogging strollers, and the company might soon have to face an onslaught of product liability suits.

Pacific Cycle issued the recall over defective front wheels on five different models of its jogging strollers. In total, over 200,000 individual strollers are affected by the recall, although the company has created a repair kit that consumers can receive at no cost. Still, recalls are not always effective at reaching every consumer who has purchased an affected product. This is especially concerning in this instance as the defective product is primarily used with small children.

Over 130 official complaints regarding the defective front wheel have been made to the company, although it is possible that the actual number of incidents is much higher. The complaints stated that the front wheel comes loose and detaches during use. At least 215 injuries have been caused by detached wheels, including head injuries, which can be quite serious.

Many parents in New York spend considerable amounts of time researching the safety of the products that they use with their children, and it can be devastating to later have a defective product cause serious injury. Manufacturers who put out these types of defective products might try to make up for the harm by offering repair kits or -- in rare cases -- refunds, but this does little to actually address the very real damages that victims typically suffer. In instances such as this, parents can usually achieve compensation on behalf of their children by successfully navigating a product liability suit to completion.
