The New York Times has recently reported that Personal Injury and other Tort claims filed annually against the New York City Police Department reached a new high of 9,448 during the previous fiscal year.

However, the City comptroller's office predicts that the figure will drop by double digits in the upcoming year. Up until the predicted decline, such tort claims against the Police Department had risen 73 percent in the past 10 years.

One cited possible cause for the anticipated decline could be the creation by the Police Department of a new risk assessment unit; improved new training for officers; and partnering with the Comptrollers office. The NYPD's Risk Management Bureau was set up to more competently investigate and analyze legal defenses pertaining to lawsuits and claims filed.

The recent measures taken by the New York Comptroller; and by the NYPD is evidence of the fact that it our civil justice system effectively compels Municipalities to take greater efforts to insure that employees conduct themselves; and carry out their responsibilities with reasonable care. The efforts of Trial Lawyers, who act as watchdogs on behalf of the public, force government departments to respect citizen's rights, and helps make New York City a safer place.
